A creative collision of worlds, bound in architectural artistry.
In the Oakridge x Westbank building, we are bringing the best of all our work together – the defining designs of our history are expressed in three themes: East, West and Contemporary. At the same time as this building is about our evolution, what distinguishes Westbank from any other practice is the integral role our collaborations have played in our growth and in setting the course of our evolution. Continuing that tradition, we have invited the renowned floral artist and botanical sculptor Azuma Makoto to collaborate with us.

Born from Japanese design, grown in Vancouver’s landscape.
Oakridge x East is a study in layers - architectural, cultural and natural. Inspired by Japanese design principles, it weaves influences from many worlds into one thoughtful whole. At East, the built environment softens into the natural, blurring boundaries until garden, home and city feel seamlessly connected.
A conversation between nature and design
In collaboration with Azuma Makoto, the Oakridge x Westbank residences are shaped by the legacy of Kengo Kuma, Toyo Ito, Shigeru Ban and OSO. Each infusing their philosophies into one unified sensory experience.

About Azuma Makoto
Azuma Makoto was born in 1976 in the prefecture of Fukuoka, Japan. As a flower artist, he owns the Jardins des Fleurs in Tokyo and is renowned for his ‘haute couture’ plant and flower installations which have been exhibited worldwide since 2005. Recent exhibitions include ‘Distortion & Flowers’ and his botanical sculptures – work in progress – are continually evolving. As a tribute to Emile Gallé, and influenced by Japanese art and the anemone flower motif that appeared throughout the Art Nouveau period, Azuma also redesigned the Floral Edition of the iconic Belle Epoque Champagne bottle for Perrier-Jouët which had not changed since 1902. Combining his knowledge of history with contemporary creation, Azuma endeavours to experiment in order to “increase the existential value of plants and flowers in botany by finding the most mysterious representations so that he can convert them into artistic expressions.”
